Cohesion of regolith: Measurements of meteorite powders

نویسندگان

چکیده

The cohesion of particles has a significant effect on the properties small bodies. In this study, we measured in open air, cohesive forces tens micron-sized irregularly shaped meteorite, silica sand, glass powder, and spherical particles, using centrifugal method. addition, estimated amount water vapor adsorbed under measurement conditions. meteorite are times smaller than those an ideally particle correspond to submicron-scale effective (or equivalent) curvature radius surface. Moreover, based expect airless bodies be approximately 10 larger air. Based results, estimate that asteroids typically sub-micro-Newton range, fast-rotating microns size.

Radar-enabled recovery of the Sutter's Mill meteorite, a carbonaceous chondrite regolith breccia.

Doppler weather radar imaging enabled the rapid recovery of the Sutter's Mill meteorite after a rare 4-kiloton of TNT-equivalent asteroid impact over the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in northern California. The recovered meteorites survived a record high-speed entry of 28.6 kilometers per second from an orbit close to that of Jupiter-family comets (Tisserand's parameter = 2.8 ± 0.3). Sutter's...

Measurements of Ejecta Velocity Distribution from Regolith Targets in Oblique

Introduction: The velocity distribution of impact ejecta from regolith-like target has been investigated in laboratory for nearly three decades. For the case of vertical impact, the ejecta velocity distribution is determined experimentally and given by a power-law with an exponent of –1.22 [1]. There is an upper limit to the ejecta velocity (Hartmann cutoff velocity) that depends on impact velo...

Measurements of thermal properties of icy Mars regolith analogs

[1] In a series of laboratory experiments, we measure thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity of icy regolith created by vapor deposition of water below its triple point and in a low pressure atmosphere. We find that an ice-regolith mixture prepared in this manner, which may be common on Mars, and potentially also present on the Moon, Mercury, comets and other bodies, has a...

Noble Gas Measurements of the Grant Iiiab Iron Meteorite

Introduction: In contrast to stony meteorites, which have exposure ages usually not higher than a few tens of million years, most iron meteorites exhibit cosmic-ray exposures of hundreds of million years. Consequently, iron meteorites have collected information about the solar system, encoded in cosmogenic nuclides, for much longer than stony meteorites. Iron meteorites are therefore indispensa...
